Back in the mid 16th century the first deposits of graphite were found in nearby Borrowdale, and the two centuries that followed a local cottage industry grew up, turning the graphite into pencils. In the Victorian period pencil factories were built in and around Keswick, and even today there is an active pencil industry in the area." |

Samuel Pepys climbed the tower of All Hallows to look upon the destruction of the Great Fire. The church, which dates from the 12th-15th centuries, was badly damaged in the Blitz, though the font cover carved by Grinling Gibbons was untouched.
