East Devon Heritage Coast

Description
This coastline is notable for its colour, as well as its ecological value; the red Devon sandstone of the cliffs is broken by the startling white chalk of the Beer headland. The cliffs are split by deep wooded combes and isolated coves, and topped by heath and grassland.

This coast is a long-established holiday destination, and there are several seaside resorts in the area, such as Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, and Seaton. Inland, the Heritage Coast merges into the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), and the AONB has responsibility for the management of the heritage coast.

Of note is the National Nature Reserve at Axmouth, a spectacular landslip stretching for fully 5 miles.

Small villages given to agriculture dot the area inland from the coast, including the childhood home of Sir Walter Raleigh at Budleigh Salterton. Meadows bordered by hedges are split by the rivers Axe, Otter, and Sid.
