Wiltshire Travel Guide - Towns and villages

Bradford-on-Avon
Bradford-on-Avon Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire
A lovely historic market town straddling the River Avon. Bradford boasts a medieval town bridge, a Saxon church, one of the most stunning medieval tithe barns in the country, and a 14th century packhorse bridge. In addition, there are numerous medieval and Jacobean buildings, including the largely 15th century parish church of Holy Trinity. The old shopping street called The Shambles still maintains its medieval layout. A real treat for visitors, Bradford-on-Avon deserves a lengthy stay.

Lacock
Lacock Lacock, Wiltshire
A village untouched by time, site of historic Lacock Abbey, which was used in the popular Harry Potter films. The entire village has been purchased by the National Trust, to be preserved as it is. Wander into the 18th century. Feast your eyes on thatched and stone cottages. Revel in Tudor, half-timbered black and white buildings. Lacock, on the southern edge of the Cotswolds, was once a centre of the medieval wool trade. Today it still reflects those times, and no TV aerials, overhead cables or yellow lines on its streets spoil the scene.

Location: 3 miles south of Chippenham off the A350

Malmesbury
Malmesbury Malmesbury, Wiltshire
Malmesbury is one of the most attractive towns in northern Wiltshire. It is famous for its association with King Alfred the Great, and for its wonderful medieval church, Malmesbury Abbey, and equally attractive market cross.

Salisbury
Salisbury Salisbury, Wiltshire
The approach to the present Salisbury Cathedral has been voted "Britains favourite view" in a national poll, and it is easy to see why the soaring spire of the church, rising above water meadows where cattle still graze, is a sight that evokes the best of traditional England.
