 Landguard Fort

An historic fort begun in 1540 as part of Henry VIII's plan of coastal defenses. Henry's fort was a six-sided blockhouse, but no trace of this early fort remains. The fort was rebuilt in 1624 as a square fort with angled bastions. In 1667 Landguard was the site of the last opposed invasion on English soil. A force of Dutch troops landed on Felixstowe beach and attacked Landguard but failed in their attempts to take the fort. The battle saw the first land engagement of The Duke of York and Albany's Marines, later the Royal Marines.
