Burton Pynsent Monument
A memorial to the 18th century industrialist Sir William Pynsent of nearby Burton Pynsent. The monument was erected by William Pitt the Elder, in gratitude after Pynsent left the estate at Burton Pynsent to Pitt in thanks for his opposition to a proposed tax on cider. The column rises to 140 feet. Stairs to the top were closed after a cow managed to climb to the viewing platform, and, unable to back down, fell to its death from the top.
