Chedworth Roman Villa
 Summary
A Romano-British villa in lovely valley setting. Two bath complexes
and intricate mosaics, with a museum of local artifacts.
Chedworth is one of the most extensive and complete Roman villas in
England. The site is in a deeply wooded valley, approached by narrow
lanes. There are almost a mile of walls intact, and excavations have
revealed two bathouses, some excellent mosaics, a hypocaust, and latrine
in quite good working order! A short walk from the villa brings you
to the site of a Roman temple beside the River Coln.
Chedworth villa was occupied from the late 2nd century to the mid-4th
century (approximately 180 - 350 AD). The site was unknown until the
mid-Victorian period when a gamekeeper stumbled upon a fragment of mosaic.
Excavations began in 1868 and have continued to this day. The museum
displays artefacts found during excavations, as well as a 15 minute
audio-visual presentaton explaining the site.
