| Castle Drogo
A twentieth century "castle" built by Sir Edward Lutyens to satisfy the aspirations to gentryhood of a successful merchant. Battlements, portcullis, fortified entrance tower, all designed to create a medieval heritage. The foundations are hewn into the rock of the hillside, to the point of having exposed granite in the bathroom. An ode to ambition, but a fascinating place to visit for all that.
Garden: Original design by Gertrude Jekyll. Formal gardens, woodland walks, roses, spring flowers, terraces, yew hedges, herbaceous borders, and more.

| Coleton Fishacre House and Garden
Arts and Crafts style house with an Art Deco interior, surrounded by a fantastic garden. The house was built in 1925 for Rupert and Lady Dorothy D'Oyly Carte.
Garden: This garden was only begun in 1925, and the wet Devon climate makes it ideal for plants that like it wet, such as bamboos, mimosa, and subtropicals. Rare trees, walled and terrace gardens, circular pool and stream gardens, scented plants and herbs. Good autumn colours.

Garden House
The Sunday Express posed the question: "Is this the best garden in Britain?" and while you are sure to have your own opinion on that one, you are also sure to appreciate the naturalistic plantings of the eight-acre garden of The Garden House, where a 16th century vicarage tower stands in a terraced walled garden, and the seasons variously offer crocuses, maples, and rhododendrons.

| Hartland Abbey
An Augustinian monastery from 1160 to 1539, Hartland Abbey was given to the Sergeant of the Wine Cellar at Hampton Court by Henry VIII. Still the home of the Stucley family, the Abbey houses Document and Photographic exhibitions. The original abbey cloisters run the length of the west passage in the basement, but above stairs 18th and 19th century remodelling features murals, painted panelling, and the vaulted and stencilled ceiling of the Alhambra Passage. Impressively restored gardens.
Garden: Since the 1950s the grounds of the 12th century Hartland Abbey have been cleared, restored and replanted. Victorian fernery, woodland gardens, bog garden, 'Ladies' woodland walk, secret walled gardens. Large glasshouses. Longer walks lead to the Cove and spectacular coastal scenery.
