Eskdale Green Heritage Snapshot
The Roman fort at Hardknott, at the eastern extremity of Eskdale, was built by Agricola in about 120 AD. It was part of a Roman supply road reaching from Ravenglass on the coast to Ambleside and beyond to Brougham, near Penrith. Hardknott was garrisoned for nearly 280 years, with the final troops leaving around 410 AD.
