Blakely Rise, otherwise known as Kinniside stone circle
Blakely Rise, otherwise known as Kinniside stone circle

Blakely Rise stone circle (Kinniside)

Cumbria has several imposing stone circles, of which Castlerigg is the best known. One of the least visited circles is Blakely Rise (otherwise known as Blakely Raise, or Kinniside). This small circle is composed of 11 stones, the tallest of which measures only 1.5 metres in height.

The circle is set immediately to the west of the minor road stretching from Ennerdale Bridge south towards Hailes. Access involves nothing more than pulling over to the side of the road. The circle is set in open moorland, with excellent views to be had all around. The circle is about 18 metres in diameter.

Blakely Rise is not as it was originally built. The circle has been reconstructed, and the base of the stones set in concrete. The really appealing aspect of this small stone circle is the setting, with moorland and open-topped hills in all directions.

As you travel south from Ennerdale Bridge the road emerges into open moorland. Blakely Rise is set beside the road.

None of the 11 stones of the circle are terribly large; what makes Blakely Rise so interesting is the location.
