Mapledurham, Berkshire Location map Mapledurham House and Watermill A superb manor with a long and fascinating history. Mapledurham estate goes back to the Domesday Book, but the current house is largely a product of the late 16th century. Sir Michael Blount began the house around 1588 and it was finished by his son Richard in 1612. Sir Charles Blount (c.1598-1655) fought for the king in the Civil War, and as a result Mapledurham was besieged and sacked by Parliamentary troops. Misfortune followed the family when Charles's son Michael was murdered by a footman in 1649. The interiors are largely Georgian and Victorian, with a wonderful, curving, Tudor staircase. Look for the carved animal heads; one of which represents a tale from Aesop. London, Greater London Location map Marble Hill House A sumptuous Palladian villa set on lawns sloping down to the Thames. Marble Hill House was built for Henrietta Howard, mistress of George II. Work began in 1724, making it one of the earliest examples of Palladian style in the country. The house was built to the designs of Roger Morris, with the gardens being the work of William Kent and Alexander Pope. Brampton, Cumbria Location map Naworth On the hillside above Lanercost Priory, close to Hadrian's Wall, lies this Tudor house, the seat of the Howard family, Earls of Carlisle. Evidence of early defenses remain, such as the 14th century tower, a testament to the turbulent past of this border region. Furnishings are sparse, as much of the Howard treasure resides at Castle Howard in Yorkshire. The largest great hall in the north (78 ft long) is the house's greatest claim to fame. Nether Winchendon, Buckinghamshire Location map Nether Winchendon House A historic manor on the banks of the Thame, Nether Winchendon has been in the same family since 1559. The most striking feature of the house is the multi-arched screen which fronts the courtyard. This is quite unusual, and to the best of my knowledge, unique in England. New Alresford, Hampshire Northington Grange A 17th century mansion built by Inigo Jones for Sir Robert Henley, Northington Grange was one of the earliest houses in England built in classical Geek style. The original design was later altered to resemble a Greek temple, making it quite unusable for habitation! The Prince Regent (later George IV) lived here briefly. Visitors can wander the extensive parkland and view the exterior of the building, but cannot curently view the inside. Brading, Isle of Wight Location map Nunwell House and Gardens A largely Jacobean house with additions from the Georgian period, Nunwell is set in a lovely location offering views to the sea. Visitors can see a set of attractive panelled rooms, including the chamber where the ill-fated King Charles I spent his last night of freedom. Meopham, Kent Location map Nurstead Court History abounds at Nurstead Court. The manor dates back over 1000 years, though the oldest part of the current house is a relative youngster, built in 1320 by Stehan de Gravesend, Bishop of London. The great hall is one of the finest in England, rising 36 feet to the roof. A solar, or lord's bedchamber, lies above the great hall; this has acted as a bedchamber for an extraordinary 670 years! The original building was much remodelled in the Victorian period, with a wing added at right angles to the hall. A tower stands at one corner of the hall; this was built for defensive purposes but was later used as a chapel. It is now in ruins. London, Greater London Location map Osterley Park The spectacular 18th-century interiors of this house comprise one of Britain's most complete examples of Robert Adam's work. In 1761 the founders of Child's Bank commissioned Adam to transform a crumbling Tudor mansion into this elegant neo-classical villa. It became their house in the country, created for entertainment and to impress their friends and business associates. The magnificent 16th-century stables survive largely intact.
