Lacock, Wiltshire Location map Lacock Abbey A manor created from an Augustinian nunnery in 1539. Lacock Abbey is set in a marvellously preserved village owned by the National Trust. Much of the monastic features survive in the house, which was the home of Fox-Talbot, one of the inventors of photography (there is a fascinating photography museum in the village). Bodmin, Cornwall Location map Lanhydrock House, courtyard and church built 1640, though largely restored in 1881 following a fire. See both family and servants rooms, furnished in the Edwardian style, including extensive kitchens. Long (116 feet) Jacobean gallery survived the fire, and you can be glad it did, for it has a wonderful plasterwork ceiling. Congleton, Cheshire Location map Little Moreton Hall Little Moreton Hall is arguably the finest half-timbered manor in England - certainly it is one of the most heavily photographed! The house is set around three sides of a cobbled courtyard and ringed around by a moat. The half-timbering is fanciful, delightfully ornate. The upper stories of the house project out over the base, and the small windows boast an enjoyable variety of Tudor glass. Little Moreton was built between 1450 and 1580 by the Moreton family, but little remains to preserve their memory. There are no corridors within the house; each room leads directly into the next, and the floors are connected by compact spiral staircases. The lack of interior furnishings allow visitors to see the wonderful plasterwork and wall paintings, including those in the long gallery. A knot garden stands outside the house. Eynsford, Kent Location map Lullingstone Castle The Lullingstone estate was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, but the current house dates to 1497. It has been home to the Peche family since it was built. The house is set in 120 acres of parkland, and offers superb gardens, including the award-winning World Garden of Plants, with over 10,000 species of plants from across the globe. The huge Henry VII Gate House is one of the earliest brick gatehouses in England. The interiors are superb, with the great hall being perhaps the finest room. East Lulworth, Dorset Location map Lulworth Castle Restored 1608 mock medieval castle. The round towers at the corners of the straightforward square building rise to four stories, providing excellent views of the surrounding countryside and coast. Lulworth Castle was gutted by fire in 1929, but in the 1970s an ambitious rebuilding plan took place with the aid of English Heritage, allowing the exterior of the castle to be restored to the condition it enjoyed the day before the fire. Lydiard Tregoze, Wiltshire Location map Lydiard Park This lovely country estate was the property of the St. John family for over 500 years, and was rescued from ruin in 1943 by the Swindon Corporation, which set about restoring the Palladian house. The visitor will find original family furnishings and fine plasterwork, as well as 'The Blue Closet', containing the treasures of 18th century society artist Lady Diana Spenser. The extensive formal parklands, undergoing a 4-year restoration project, remain open to visitors. Disley, Cheshire Location map Lyme Park Lyme Park was begun in the Tudor period but the present house was transformed by the architect Leoni into an ornate Italian palace in the 1720s. Within the house traces of the Elizabethan core remain, providing a contrast with Leoni's work. The showpiece staterooms are festooned with tapestries, a fine collectron of English clocks, and carvings by Grinling Gibbons. Yet the interior is a mix of styles. The Elizabethan long gallery has retained much of its original character, and the royal coat of arms stands over the fireplace in the drawing room. Some fine period furnishings are scattered throughout, though little remains to commemorate the Legh family, who owned the house from the 14th century to 1946. In the library are 3 ancient Greek tombstones brought here by archaeologist Thomas Legh in the 19th century. Charlton Mackrell, Somerset Location map Lytes Cary Manor The oldest part of Lytes Cary is the chapel, which dates to the 14th century. The 15th century saw the construction of the Great Hall, and major additions were made in the 16th. Fallen derelict in the 20th century, the house was restored by Sir Walter Jenner.
