Ightham Mote
Ightham Mote is one of the best preserved, and certainly one of the most beautiful, moated manor houses in England. The house dates back to the 14th century. The name presents a challenge to linguists; Ightham may refer to an early settler of the region, named Ehta or Ohta. Mote may refer to the moat which surrounds the manor, or it may equally well be a derivative of 'moot', a gathering place.

Kelmarsh Hall
A lovely 18th century stately home, built by James Gibbs for William Hanbury. Hanbury was an antiquarian of some reputation, when he came into money by marrying the niece of Viscount Bateman. Hanbury hired Gibb to create a classical mansion in Palladian style, replacing a more modest Jacobean house on the site. Gibb worked closely with Francis Smith of Warwick (see Sutton Scarsdale Hall and Gainsborough All Saints church) to create the result you see today; a lovely house composed of a large central block and two wings. The house is set in a mix of parkland and formal gardens on the border between Northamptonshire and Leicestershire.

Kensington Palace

When Sir George Coppin built the house in 1605, it slumbered in peaceful splendour amid farmland, but the city gradually spread to envelope it. William and Mary bought the house in 1689 and brought in Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor to enlarge it. This they did in an informal, "homey" style, at least compared to the regal stuffiness of Hampton Court. The State Apartments show art from the Royal Collection, and there is also a Court Dress Collection.

Kirby Hall
One of the great Elizabethan houses of England, Kirby Hall was built for Sir Humphrey Stafford of Blatherwick in 1570. Sir Humphrey had little time to enjoy his grand new house, for he died in 1575. The property was purchased by Sir Christopher Hatton of Holdenby, who later rose to become Lord Chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I.

Knebworth House
Home of the Lytton family for over 500 years, Knebworth was transformed in 1843 from a red brick Tudor house into a veritable feast of gothic turrets, gargoyles and griffins, by poet-statesman Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Nowadays Knebworth is most well known as venue for huge rock concerts, but on quieter days throughout the spring and summer you can wander in peace around the 25 acres of grounds, or the varied stately public rooms of this lived-in home.
