Fortified manor begun in 1280 by Lawrence of Ludlow, a wealthy wool merchant, incorporating parts of older buildings. Stonor Park
Stonor Park has been the home of the staunchly Catholic Stonor family for over 800 years. The elegant house sits beside a 14th century chapel, with walled Italianate gardens to the rear. The oldest part of the house dates to the 12th century, with a 14th century hall. A Georgian front was added in the 18th century, but little has changed since that time, meaning that visitors today see a house essentially unchanged for over 250 years.

Stourhead
Stourhead is reason enough to visit England all by itself. It is a brilliant Arcadian design begun by Henry Hoare, incorporating ever changing vistas around a lake, replete with temples to Apollo and Flora, a rock bridge, a cascade, a pantheon, a thatched cottage, and a grotto. Hoare's vision did not run to the rhododendrons, added by a descendant, which are one of the main reasons people flock to Stourhead today. Best in: spring for rhododendrons, early summer for azaleas, and anytime for a truly wonderful landscape garden experience. My personal favourite among British gardens.

Strawberry Hill
Horace Walpole called Strawberry Hill his "little Gothic castle". A unique, extravagant house, Strawberry Hill set the stage for the Victorian Gothic Revival movement. Originally a small William and Mary house, it was transformed by Walpole over the period 1747 to1792 into a magical medieval extravaganza of turrets, arches, battlements, and antiquities. The furnishings are as unusual as the architecture, featuring Walpole's curious collections of art, furniture, and historical prints.

Sutton House
A unique survival in London's East End, Sutton House was built by Sir Ralph Sadleir, a rising star at the court of Henry VIII. It became home to successive merchants, Huguenot silk weavers, Victorian schoolmistresses and Edwardian clergy and, although altered over the years, remains essentially a Tudor house. Oak panelled rooms and carved fireplaces survive intact and an exhibition tells the story of its former occupants.
