Roman Garden Chester, Cheshire The "Roman Garden" monicker is something of a misnomer. Certainly there is no indication that a garden existed on this site near Newgate during Roman times. The garden space was, in fact, assembled in 1949 from bits and pieces of Roman artifacts found throughout Chester. The gardens contain Roman columns and a "hypocaust" or underfloor heating system. The gardens were remodeled in 2000 to provide access to the River Dee. Interpretive panels tell the story of Roman Chester and the garden site. Runnymede Egham, Surrey Attractive meadows, grassland, and woodland along the banks of the Thames, Runnymede is the site where King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta in 1215. The remains of the 12th century priory of Ankerwycke can be seen across the river, and nearby is the Ankerwycke Yew, thought to be over 200 years old. Here are memorials to John F Kennedy and one erected by the American Bar Association to commemorate the significance of the Magna Carta. A network of footpaths cover the site.
